Project KickStart
Project KickStart is a youth development initiative that uses football as a vehicle for personal growth and success. In partnership with schools across South and East Auckland, we offer free football sessions, mentorship, and a holistic development program that goes beyond just sport.
Founded by Troy Thomas and Kevin Mc Afee, Project KickStart emphasizes not only improving football skills but also building mental resilience, emotional intelligence, and life principles. Our focus is on developing well-rounded individuals, equipping them with the mindset to excel both on the pitch and in life.
Through our tailored approach, young athletes gain confidence, discipline, and a strong sense of self-worth—skills that help them succeed long after the final whistle. Our unique combination of technical coaching and mental wellbeing support sets us apart, making sure each player is empowered to reach their full potential, on and off the field.
Get Involved: If you're a school looking to bring Project KickStart to your students, we'd love to collaborate. Together, we can create opportunities for young people to grow, thrive, and build a strong foundation for their future.
Testimonies
Tangaroa College have been working with Project KickStart representives (Kevin Mc Afee & Troy Thomas ). I can confirm that due to this collaboration we already have six staff 'football volunteers' (not all of them coaches) recently signed up to assist our new Football Program at the college. This would clearly suggest we are on the right path. And due to this project our college will field Junior and Senior boys football teams this season. A 100% improvement before we even start!

Sancta Maria College has been using Kickstart Football in our Physical Education programme, and we would 100% recommend to any school. They have awesome facilitators which make the students feel comfortable and ready to play. They can create and tailor lessons and programmes that suit the needs and skill levels of the students involved, making them more motivated to learn, develop confidence and enjoy the game.

Dear whom it may concern, I am writing to offer my endorsement for the recent football sessions carried out by Troy and his team. These sessions provided an exceptional experience for our students, successfully blending physical education with social and emotional learning objectives. The program was expertly structured, utilising dynamic football drills and engaging games not just to promote physical activity and teamwork, but also through a deliberate wellbeing lens. Made possible by generous funding from CLM, the core goal of focusing on fun, collaboration, and personal growth was evident in every session, creating a wonderfully positive and inclusive environment where every child felt motivated and valued. Troy and his team were professional, and highly effective educators. They demonstrated outstanding qualities, being consistently organised, approachable, positive, and engaging with all participants. Their energy and clear communication ensured that the sessions ran seamlessly and maintained a high level of excitement and engagement. The success of the program was universal, with all students, ranging from Year 0 to Year 6, thoroughly enjoying the experience. The feedback from both the students and staff was that the sessions provided immense value and we are all looking forward to continuing with Project Kickstart next year. Yours sincerely,
